Baptistery of San Giovanni (Canosa di Puglia, Italy)

In the sixth century, Bishop Sabinus of Canosa commissioned a monumental baptistery that was to be built next to the basilica dedicated to the Virgin Mary, which had been constructed in the fourth century. The baptistery was dedicated to the Baptist.

The baptistery (the building in the background) was centrally planned and adorned with mosaic decoration.

In the foreground are the remains of a large portico that led to the entrance of the baptistery. It also connected to the basilica to the south (to the left in this photograph, but not in view).

The site continued to be subject to various architectural interventions, including the construction of the smaller church of San Salvatore in the early Medieval period.
