Angletarn Pikes & Place Fell
. . . confusingly merging to appear as one entity.
Place Fell is a special hill for me: it was the first sizeable fell I climbed in Lakeland. That October morning, a few years ago now, really opened my eyes to that incredible landscape potential, unique to the area. Previously, I had, in my mind, predicted similar, possibly tamer & perhaps similar, hill-country to the more modest parts of the Scottish Highlands. How wrong I was.
It's just such a remarkable landlocked 'island' of bafflingly glorious scenery. The country surrounding it could be anywhere in lowland Great Britain, then . . . bam! this great swell of shapely hills materializes. Its that potent contrast that marks it out: you could have lived all your life in, & never left, nearby Penrith, & never had an inkling that such a collection of fairytale haunts could be so close.
