Hội An là một thành phố trực thuộc tỉnh, được thành lập ngày 29 tháng 1 năm 2008 theo Nghị định số 10/2008/NĐ-CP của Chính phủ Cộng hòa Xã hội chủ nghĩa Việt Nam. Hội An hiện nay đã được công nhận là đô thị loại III, trực thuộc tỉnh Quảng Nam.
