"Self-portrait at the Mesa Hideout"
(November 13th, 2021)
Terlingua Ranch, Texas, U.S.A.
I travelled again to the Chihuahuan Desert like usual in November, which is the best time for me and other desert lovers, I guess. I like thinking about it as my place on Earth.
I took this self-portrait at the Mesa Hideout, a rustic off-grid adobe perched high on the edge of Jack Eden Mesa in the Chihuahuan Desert in the very remote location. Staying there for three days has been the most unique, wild west experience for me so far, not avaialable to many other places in the same area. It was a one-room cabin featuring 4 twin beds, cushioned window seats (with views to die for), and a table with chairs. It also had an indoor bathroom, a kitchen area and a wood burning stove.
That day I didn't go hiking in the Big Bend. I stayed lazy at the cabin. I truly enjoy this kind of laziness without being in a hurry. I feel it allows me to experience things deeply. I just thought it would be a sin to go somewhere else while already being in the wilderness with a feast to the eyes.
I remember I was left all by myself for a couple of hours. Upon such accasions, I realize better that solitude is a treasure to cherish. I tried to be very attentive to the surroundings listening the the least audible sounds of Nature. That was enough to do, enough to make me happy. I loved the company of the black raven while preparing my salad in the kitchen that broke a pure most perfect silence. I could hear steps outside the cabin from far away. Desert is such an amazing place! I want so badly to learn more about it.

About the project:
I wish to look at myself in all reflected streets and places I will be passing by. These self-portraits are inspired by Vivian Maier's self-portraiture: www.vivianmaier.com
