Self-portrait

(February 3rd, 2019)

Magnolia Movie Theater, Dallas, TX, U.S.A.

"Cold War" (Polish "Zimna wojna"), a 2018 period drama directed by Paweł Pawlikowski was the first movie in my mother tongue that I saw tonight after over 4 years since I'd immigrated to the U.S.

It was so deeply rooted in Polish folklore and culture that I used to be very familiar with; yet, it made me feel uncomfortable at so many levels... I stayed seated for a long while like hypnotized in an empty room after everyone left, with bleeding eyes and a restless heart. I had a silly thought that perhaps for the first time during my stay here in the U.S. finally I got the full message and faster than anybody else who had to read the subtitles.

It wasn't too comforting though. Just a few minutes later, I was back to American reality: no one around was speaking Polish, the temperature outside was around 17 degrees Celsius, I didn't have to use too much of my legs to go back home, everything looked beautiful, everyone was happy, even I could have a chocolate vegan ice-cream without any problem.

About the project:

I wish to look at myself in all reflected streets and places I will be passing by. These self-portraits are inspired by Vivian Maier's self-portraiture: www.vivianmaier.com
