2024 091-366 Moderate Becoming Good Later
Another monthly reading challenge from the library. When I heard that the March challenge was a travel book, I thought for a while before Googling kayaking books.
Kayaking was a huge part of my life for many years, and I've read a couple of good travel kayaking books. I've also read a lot of climbing and cycling books, but wanted to rediscover my love of the water, even if I no longer get out there.
I found "Moderate Becoming Good Later, Sea Kayaking the Shipping Forecast" by Toby and Katie Carr. What a gem! You don't need to be a kayaker to enjoy Toby's voyages (but it might help a bit).
Perhaps being a certain age, and brought up on the Shipping Forecast on Radio 4 helps as well. Youngsters today don't get to hear "Dogger, Fisher, German Bight" as a part of their day, and I feel quite sad to think what they are missing. There is a poetry about the phrases used. Apart from 00:48 and 05:20 the broadcasts are now only on longwave, which will soon be disappearing.
Toby is no longer with us, having died as a result of a life-limiting genetic disorder which had affected most of his life. His book was completed by his sister following his death in 2022.
I have paired the book with an image on my computer of my more dramatic sea kayaking trip to Old Harry Rocks in 2014.
This is the best book I have read this year so far.
