Soul Brown
SOUL BROWN (The Freedom Prophetess) delivers poetry inspired by the true stories and global experiences of African peoples throughout the diaspora, drawing attention to their struggles for liberation over oppression. Her writing focuses on the intersection of geography, history, and time; incorporating music and chanting to create an aural
atmosphere for celebration, protest, and transformation. Her writing can be found in the recently published Liberation Poetry: An Anthology, edited by Tontongi and Jill Netchinsky and From Totems to Hip-Hop: A Multicultural Anthology of Poetry Across the Americas 1900-2002 (De Capo Press, 2002), edited by Ishmael Reed. Soul is the director of Books of Hope, a Somerville-based literacy empowerment program that develops urban youth into book authors.
