Uma azinheira: Azul verde e branco alentejanos
It was near Pavia that I had to stop the car to capture this image of a solitary holm oak surrounded by vast green fields. Later, on other trips through my beloved Alentejo, I realized that images like this one were repeated and taught me this simple and enigmatic truth: there are trees, fields and sky and people looking at them. The holm oak is one of the two most characteristic trees of the Alentejo, and it also exists in other regions of Portugal and the Mediterranean basin. Its fruit, the acorn, is used by pigs to feed themselves. Holm oak firewood is excellent and burns slowly.
Foi perto de Pavia que tive de parar o carro para captar esta imagem de uma azinheira solitária rodeada de vastos campos verdes. Posteriormente, noutras viagens pelo meu Alentejo adorado, apercebi-me de que imagens como esta se repetem e me ensinam esta verdade simples e enigmática: há árvores, campos e céu e pessoas que os olham.
A azinheira é uma das duas árvores mais características do Alentejo, existindo também noutras regiões de Portugal e da bacia mediterrânica. Com o seu fruto, a bolota, alimentam-se porcos. A lenha de azinho é excelente, ardendo devagar.
