Leaf Cutter Bee

If you find neat little circles missing from your rose bushes this is probably the culprit.

The female leaf cutter bee uses these sections of leaf to line the brood cell where she will deposit a single egg and provision it with pollen and nectar. The bees look for ready made cavities to nest in or, as in this case, they will excavate a chamber in soft, rotting wood as evidenced by the pile of debris at the bottom of this picture.
