Market Place, Richmond, North Yorkshire. Postcard published about 1940/1

Published by Walter Scott, Bradford, probably 1940/1 as the reverse has the following quotation by King George VI; "... help to make the world a better place and life a worthier thing." This quotation is taken from his Christmas Day message, 25th December 1940.

I'd estimate the picture was taken a year or two before that. The back to back shops in front of the Bishop Blaize pub were demolished not too long after, and in the 1960's United buses used to stop where the buildings stand in this picture.

Holy Trinity chapel is, and never was, the parish church. Services are still held in part of the building, although much of the space is given over to the Green Howard's Regimental Museum, see; www.richmondhudswellparish.org.uk/holy-trinity-chapel.html

The Norman castle keep towers over the Market Place.

My father worked in a bank just to the left of this shot in the late 1930's. My mother's cousin's husband was Mayor of Richmond for a long period during WW2.
