Penelope Waits - Enchantment

Penelope's test.

Penelope was Odysseus' faithful wife, who waited for him for the ten years it took him to return to her from The Trojan War (he was away for a total of 20 years as the Trojan War itself lasted 10 years). Odysseus however was most definitely NOT faithful and had been entranced by Calypso for many years. Penelope had 108 suitors, all eager to become King of Ithaca, and for 5 years she staved them off by telling them that she needed to finish weaving a special burial shroud for her husband's father. She however unpicks her weaving work each night and so delays having to choose amongst them. After someone uncovers her ruse, she is forced to choose a suitor, but avoided doing so temporarily by imposing a test on her suitors, Whoever could string Odysseus's gigantic bow and shoot an arrow through twelve axe heads could have her hand. By that time Odysseus in disguise has returned, and he joins the test and wins. He then slaughters all 108 suitors. I think there might have been a better choice for dear Penelope.
