Sorting for the community

“I do the sorting here,” said Elayne with a smile, just when the song raw hide came on the shop sound system, “oh and I’m in charge of the music choices too.”

Everyone laughed and it was evident that this was a group of ladies that enjoyed each other’s company.

Elayne is a volunteer at the Murwillumbah Palliative care OP shop.

Sorting, I can tell you is no mean feat there. New stock comes in constantly and must be sorted and displayed priced and sold. Unlike most shops they have no choice what items will arrive and there is not always an exact place to put things.

Items including books, furniture, clothing, pictures, toys, lamps, collectables, pots and pans and whatever ends up at their door for sale need to be priced and placed on display.

Born in bred in Murwillumbah, Elayne enjoys the constant interaction with locals.

“We meet so many nice people who come into the store, “says Elayne.

Elaynes is a character and her smile and enthusiasm for her work makes you instantly at ease.

“What is your motto for life?” I asked.

“Well,” she said with a cheeky grin, “My mum always told me to be nice or she would bash me, you can ask her if you like.”

Elayne pointed to her mum who is a veteran volunteer at the shop and was sitting on a stool by the counter nodding.

“I started working here 13 months ago when mum had a triple bypass and was unable to do her volunteer work for a while.” said Elaine.

Mum now makes the tea and helps out as much as she can, leaving her daughter to do the sorting.

Clearly the dedication that both Elayne and her mother have for the small community of Murwillumbah contributes to making it such a great place to live. Long hours working sorting and collecting stock for the shop has contributed to the Palliative care initiative, which supports the terminally ill and their families.

It is wonderful to see that the caring nature has been handed down a generation to Elayne and now she is a role model to so many more.

We should all appreciate their great work…
