When Volunteering is your passion
Edna Gorton is a local to the Murwillumbah region. Starting her life at Burrell Creek and later moving to Uki finally to settle in Murwillumbah the last 43 years.
Sadly Edna’s husband is no longer with us, but it is with a great smile that Edna tells me that her four children and their families are all settled in the Northern Rivers area.
Edna works as a volunteer five and a half days a week at the Tweed Palliative care op shop in Queen Street , Murwillumbah. When many people would be retiring and staying home to smell the roses, Edna is working hard to raise funds that benefit her community. The op shop helps fund a very important cause.
Tweed Palliative Support is a not for profit free home based community volunteer service providing practical assistance and support for people diagnosed with a life threatening illness.
Her commitment and dedication has earned her the Australia day, Tweed Volunteer of the year award in 2011.
While I was interviewing a woman declared “Edna is a local Treasure.”
Edna tells me,” It is better than being at home on your own, the people who come into the shop are so nice.
I believe it is the pleasant and friendly atmosphere offered by all the volunteers of the shop that it is frequented as a favourite haunt of many Murwillumbah bargain hunters.
A history of fourteen years working for the Salvation Army made her a very welcome addition to the OP shop. Three years ago while recuperating from a broken leg, Edna was approached by the president of Tweed Palliative care to come and join their volunteer team. If you ask me I think they were lucky that she was off her feet for a spell, because this lady would be hard to chase down. Our community can only benefit from people with Edna’s dedication and commitment to the community she lives in…
Thank you from all of us Edna..
