The Buddha at Langza, Spiti
Langza at 14,550 feet (4,420 m) is one bone freezing place to be in the month of February. I woke up before the alarm chimed at 3:30 am and put on the customary five layers and yet as I stepped out of the warm Homestay, the cold wind bit my naked eyes and chin. The Mercury had dipped below minus eighteen degrees Celsius and I wondered about my sanity, as I trudged through the snow towards the distant Buddha, sitting in a lotus posture.
The favourite part of a night shoot at such high places is the solitude and the connection with the universe. An inexplicable stillness and peace prevails within you, as you try to decipher how every cell of yours hails from what looms overhead.
As I fumbled through the focusing drills, so typical of a dark night astro shoot, a big meteor streaked by. What a shame, one of the biggest, that I had ever seen and all I had was a blurry image. I quickly got a few sharp images and walked back to my homestay with my digits stiff and in severe pain and yet a smile at what I just experienced.
At times, the coldest nights have some real warm stories!
