The Girl with the Flaxen Hair

decalcomania - oil on board (2' x 3')

The surrealist Óscar Domínguez referred to his work as "decalcomania with no preconceived object", using gouache spread thinly on a sheet of paper (glass has been used), which is then pressed onto another surface such as a canvas.

Here I have substituted gouache with oil colour thinned with turpentine on glass with board as the pressed surface.

Surrealist automatism is a method of art-making in which the artist suppresses conscious control over the making process, allowing the unconscious mind to have great sway making use of this method through 'chance operations'.
