Passing Relics

A rare view of two early container ships of the Matson line passing in Seattle's Elliott Bay. In the foreground is Maui, built in 1978, and in the background is Mahimahi, built as President Washington in 1982. At 34 and 30 years old, respectively, in an era when most merchant ships are lucky to see their 25th birthday, these two elderly vessels are among the last of their kind, and this is one of the few places where you may see two of this age pass. Or, two bridge-forward container ships, for that matter, other than a handful of newbuilds, most are a vanished breed.

 

However, one can only imagine that it's a sight that may not be seen too many more times...
