Emma Collins - Dark Side-Light Side

My art work relates to an issue which concerns me deeply - the often unrecognised subject of child abuse and the long term related consequences. The dark side of the mask symbolises a front worn by the abused often throughout their entire life and behind which lies a dark and tragic history of mental and physical chaos. A closed mask, unseeing eyes, empty and emotionless. The light side of the mask reveals a blue ribbon which represents the tears which when allowed to flow release the 'inner knot' to free the long hidden fears, anxieties and loneliness. The history of child abuse is long and terrible but hope lies within an involvement of people in our communities who by wearing a blue ribbon create an awareness of the hidden tragedy, enabling the abused to reach out and embrace a new and happy life.
