mungo national park - one road in...

Our trip out to Mungo National Park was about 168km - 100km on sealed road and 68 along the dirt, very rough and dusty road pictured. It was so isolated that we diid not see another car along the two roads. It was not until we arrived at the visitors centre that we saw civilisation!

Mungo National Park is a unique, arid park and part of the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Region. The park covers almost 28 000 hectares 110 km north east of Mildura.

Lake Mungo, which has been dry for 18 000 years, was a huge freshwater lake during the last Ice Age. Evidence of Aboriginal occupation dates back more than 40 000 years. The bones of some of the oldest known human occupation of Australia have been found in the Mungo area.

The park was proclaimed a National Park in 1979.

The roads in are extremely rough and impassable to all vehicles in wet weather.
