Self Portrait: Another Side to Who I am
I’m Natalie. I’m a daughter, a friend, and a student. I am a lot of things, and a lot of this can be shown through my photography. I see things some people may not notice, and I think that makes me unique. People say I have a good eye, and I like to think so as well. I love to take the time to show others what I find beautiful. I think you can tell a lot about a person by the kind of photographs they take. Why? I’ll tell you.
I feel people take photos to tell others the things that they may not be able to say themselves. I think everyone wants to show who they are, but we all know that is never easy. That’s why I love photography. I can show my friends, family, and even strangers who I am on my own terms. I don’t owe anyone an explanation of what one of my photos means. I want them to see it in their own way. I don’t want people coming up to me saying “hey, what exactly does this picture mean?” Instead, I want them to say “hey, I like this, what were some thoughts you had while shooting this?” See the difference? I don’t want people wanting a concrete answer, but something they can hold onto to interpret my photographs in their own, personal way.
For my self portrait project, I chose to represent myself in two ways. The two individual pictures represent two different sides of me. For my traditional self portrait, I took a picture of myself just portraying a “typical teenager” by just showing what I am like on a regular day and how others see me. For my alter-ego self portrait, I took a picture of my eye, portraying that even though I come across to others as outgoing, there is a side of me that is quiet and shy. It also shows that I don’t open up to people right away and I don’t show them who I am 100% at first, but instead I take the time to get to know someone before showing them who I really am. Both of them show a different side of me and tell a different side of my story in defining who I am.
