Mr. Xantopol - A Portrait by Pascal Sébah

Photographer:Pascal Sébah (1823-1886) from Constantinople/Istanbul, great Turkish photographer (child of a Syrian Catholic and an Armenian), was a leading figure of photography in Turkey and the Middle East. Aside portraits, he produced memorable city landscapes, ethnographic photos, captures of historic monuments and various compositions that make of him one of the first “art photographers”

1857 opened a photographic studio at 10 Tom Tom Sokaği, ( 'El Chark Societé Photographic').

(1858?) Later he opened a new studio at 232 Grand Rue de Péra.

1860 he moved to Grand Rue de Péra 439, and employed A. Laroche to run that studio.

The original studio on Tom Tom Sokaği remained open, and was used as a laboratory.

1873 Brought him the consacration as an artist:

- Medal from the Societé Française de Photographie

- Ottoman exhibition in Vienna: Sébah presented a fascinating album, Les Costumes Populaires de la Turquie. He received a gold medal from the Austrians and another medal from the Sultan Abdülaziz.

- opened a branch in Cairo

1878 silver medal at the ‘Exposition Universelle‘ for photographs of Nubian desert tribes.

1883 suffered a stroke; his brother Cosmi, and later Jean Sébah (1872-1947), Pascal’s son, run the studio up to 1945.
