Blocked artery, post mortem. Arteries carry oxygenated blood from the heart to all tissues of the body. This artery has been blocked by atheroma, the deposition of fatty material (yellow) on the inner walls of the arteries. Post-mortem examinations, also known as autopsies, are carried out to identify a cause of death, and to assess the health of a dead person's organs.
