Sunflower and Ferns

I had aspirations to go backpacking up on a mountain somewhere last night, but as always, the weather crapped up again on Friday evening. A few puffy clouds with haze and then overcast...I didn't miss anything so glad to not go to the trouble. This morning slept in late, generally a hindrance to getting any good shots in photography, but some light rain had come bringing fog into the mountains.

July is a tough month for me in obtaining good shots, and particularly being motivated since it follows June that is typically my best month. I have been keeping tabs on the Woodland Sunflowers up on the parkway and they have pretty much come in, so I figured today to be a great chance at them with fog. This has become an annual event for me since I find it the best photo op in my area the entire summer.

Though the conditions were absolutely perfect for this type of scenery, they were absolutely tough for photography. The rain was pretty light, but collecting in the canopy for massive "dumps" when the wind whipped on through. The stiff breeze was almost constant, making this type of long stemmed flower bob and weave around in almost continuous motion. The dim conditions wanted a rather lengthy shutter speed, but I was forced to take up the ISO more than normal in order to have any chance at all. Water droplets splashing onto the lens, and regular fogging when the lens cap was installed. My original session with this flower was compromised with motion, discovered a few miles down the parkway when I stopped for another shot and looked over things a little closer, so had to go back for a second try.

I liked this scene with the wet, lush ferns, the foggy "Lord of the Rings" look of the forest, and this one sunflower growing up out of it all. This was a pretty simple process of 2 images of one stop difference blended with luminosity masking and levels adjustment...forgot to sharpen.
