Time for a quick one !!!
Horsehouse is situated about 20 miles southwest of Richmond. This is the only village in the parish of Carlton Highdale, steeped in history and surrounded by many scattered farmsteads and hamlets stretching from Coverhead in the west to Gammersgill and Fleensop in the east and across to Swineside.
Horsehouse, as the name implies, was once a staging post on the axial , drove roads linking markets in Wensleydale, Wharfedale and Nidderdale and latterly, on the main coach road from London to Richmond. It was once a busy place with a school, two public houses, one church, two chapels and a local post office/shop which opened from 7.00 am to 8.00 pm- A local charity known as Forsters Charity, dating back to 1897, is used to purchase coal and logs for the welfare of the older members of the parish. Then there is the Constantine Trust. This was first mentioned in 1904, having connections with a former pupil - the Coverdale Bard, Henry Constantine. This money is used for the educational needs of the children, providing a book at Christmas time. The school closed in the early 1940s and the building is now used as the village hall.
Neither of the two chapels remain; one was converted into a house in the mid 1960s and the other closed in 1983. St Botolph's is the parish church of Coverdale, which today is part of the united parish with Middleham and East Witton. Originally built in 1530 as a chapel of ease, it was rebuilt in 1869.
The Thwaite Arms is the only remaining public house. There remains one shop which is the post office and general store, which during the tourist season provides tea and refreshments and also bed and breakfast.
Sadly this is now closed ((
This is still sheep country with many people involved within the farming industry, but the community has changed. The area is attracting more and more visitors who come to enjoy the peace and tranquility.
