A bothy view revisited . . . Explore 06-03-2024 #9

In 2017 we hiked Haystacks with muddybootsuk and most of our walk was spent wandering in a low cloud that had settled over the fell. The next year I was determined to return for a photo through the window of Green Crag Quarry Bothy.

This image was inspired by images of Tall Guy and YorkshireSam. I wanted to have a go at it myself. I was prepared . . . candle and matches to light the lantern packed . . . that was until I proceeded to leave them in the car when we headed off. Fortunately, there were matches in the bothy, but only the remains of used up candles with no wicks remaining. I attempted to make do with hopes that by lighting a match and placing it in the lantern it would burn long enough to capture the image. Apparently, the match melted enough of the remaining wax around the edge to turn the match into a 2 inch long burning wick that continued to blaze much longer than expected. Some, Terry Roberts comes to mind; have said 'might burn the place down!' It wasn't quite that severe . . . but we could have roasted marshmallows above the top vents of the lantern.

I'm happy with the result; glad we (Barb and I) went back and especially that we did it with friends!
