The Four Apostles . . . Explore 27-10-2023 #49

After years of holiday travel, finally the city of Barcelona was on the itinerary, where the Sagrada Família was at the top of my must visit locations.

Construction on the Sagrada Familia was started in 1882 and is still under construction 140 years later. It was designed by Antoni Gaudi. The intentions are that the construction will be completed by 2026 for the 140th anniversary of Gauid's death. Sagrada Família is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and its construction has been funded entirely with private donations.

The exterior of the basilica is a thing of beauty, but the interior is a feast for the eye. This is the center view looking up at the ceiling of Sagrada Familia. 'The Four Apostles' title comes from the four central inclined columns which are dedicated to an apostle (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John)

A couple descriptions of the basilica taken from Wikipedia:

"Describing the Sagrada Família, art critic Rainer Zerbst said, "it is probably impossible to find a church building anything like it in the entire history of art", and Paul Goldberger describes it as "the most extraordinary personal interpretation of Gothic architecture since the Middle Ages".

One location checked off my bucket list. It was worth the wait!!
