Near Cameron, AZ - Government Shutdown - 2013
Road sign on State Highway 64 indicating that Grand Canyon National Park is closed. A flashing automated sign can be seen in the background with a similar message. This was due to the Government Shutdown. Although the Park Superintendent dutifully followed orders from above and shut the visitor center, stores, hotels, gift shops, campgrounds, hiking trails, museums, etc., Highway 64 remained open for a few days as a through route between Highway 89 and Tusayan. The vindictive Superintendent subsequently shut the road because visitors had the audacity to stop along the highway and look out at his canyon. Imagine that! Apparently he was in the process of devising a means to screen the entire his Canyon with a spite fence when the shutdown ended ; ). Way to go NPS!
