This is an image of the Crab Nebula (Messier 1), the first object on Charles Messier's famous 18th century list of things which are not comets. The Crab Nebula known to be the remnant of a supernova, the nebula is formed of the debris from the explosion of a massive star, this was witnessed by astronomers in the year 1054. The Crab Nebula is around 6500 light-years away in the constellation of Taurus. Shown here in a false colour palette, the image is composed of over eighteen hours of total exposure.
