Macnab Wing, Holy Cross Centre
Mission District, Calgary
The Holy Cross Hospital, established in 1891 by the Grey Nuns, Sisters of Charity, was originally a three-storey, fifty square foot building. Over the years a number of additions and changes were made until 1965 when much of what existed was demolished and a modern hospital constructed.
The Macnab Wing, a Classical Revival-style structure, was built in 1928-29. It is a tangible reminder of the Roman Catholic origins of the Mission area. The hospital was closed in 1996 and will eventually be torn down and redeveloped. The Macnab Wing will remain as a historical resource.
