191/365 Kokeshi

These simple handcrafted Japanese wooden dolls have been made for over 150 years. (Although it is said that they were sold to visitors in the Tohoku region during the Edo Period (1600-1868).

A few simple painted lines define its face and the body often has floral and/or ring designs painted in red, black, and sometimes green, purple, blue, or yellow inks.

I was given my first kokeshi doll back in the early 70's. I recently found this one in a local charity store.
