130/366 Lock and Keys
Kwikset was founded in 1946 by Adolf Schoepe and Karl Rhinehart.
Schoepe born in Berkenroth, Germany emigrated to the US in 1927. He spoke no English. He worked for various companies, Curtis Aviation in Missouri, Spartan Aircraft in Oklahoma. and then the Goodyear Company in Ohio.
In 1946 he and his friend Karl Rhinehart, founded Gateway Manufacturing Company. Schoepe obtained patents on a number of technical innovations on lock designs. They bought out a small defunct lock company in California, and began manufacturing the Kwikset, a line of door locks. Kwiket became the most common brand of locks in the United States and was later bought by Black and Decker.
As for Mr. Schoepe he went on and founded Fluidmaster, Inc., an aftermarket toilet tank repair kit which became another successful company. I suppose you could say he was flushed with success.
I thought I'd tell you that to make my boring picture a little more interesting :)
