San Antonio
The village of Alamillo was settled in June 1800. It was
named for a nearby Piro* pueblo of the same name. San Antonio Mission Church was built in 1928. It escaped serious damage from the floods of 1929 and 1937 and is still standing today. It looks like it used even though it looks like a few repairs are necesssary. I look forward to revisiting when the cottonwood is in full leaf.
Alamillo, Socorro County, NM
*The Piros were a Native American Pueblo people that lived in a number of pueblos in the Rio Grande Valley around modern Socorro, NM. Very little is known about the Piros. Currently there is an archaeological excavation which is actively pursued annually in June and July, in a location near Luis Lopez, five miles south of present-day Socorro. That's a trip for another day.
