C is for Church

The church of San Francisco de Asis built in 1839 in Golden NM. Golden officially became a town in 1879 and soon grew to become the new gold mining district. The town housed many saloons, businesses, a school, a post office and even a stock exchange. All was short lived as by 1884 the gold was already starting to dwindle. By 1928 the population was so reduced and the post office closed and Golden officially became a ghost town. Abandoned homes soon crumbled and vandalism has played a big part. So little remains of this once vibrant little town. Golden is home to a few residents so not strictly a ghost town more a sleepy little town in the Ortiz Mountains.

On my last visit to this church I met Michael Montoya who was renovating this church. He's done amazing work on the church and the cemetery.
