Gaslamp Light Trails (Explored - Frontpage)

Explored on 04/17/2011 (#9)

A special technique was used to make this shot possible. Here's how it happened -

When I metered the light before taking this shot - it showed a 20 sec exposure at f/16 for the correct exposure. The issue was that, it being a weekend evening, there wasn't enough traffic to get the necessary light trails with a 20 sec exposure. Also, the cars stopped at the light on the left side of the image were overexposing that section badly.

To resolve this situation, I put the camera in BULB mode and covered the lens with a Galen-Rowell Filter Cover (I had nothing else that could be used to cover the lens. Lens cap doesn't work because if you touch the camera, you will end up shaking it ever so slightly.) Only where there were enough cars to capture light trails, I would uncover the lens and count the number of seconds of exposure.

By trial and error, I finally got this one right.
