Celebrating Chrysanthemums
‘Kiku’ (the Japanese word for ‘chrysanthemum’) is on display, celebrating the flower's importance in Japanese culture.
Over the past 11 months, they have been expertly trained in modern and ancient styles.
Many kiku designs are meticulously woven onto bamboo frames to create floral displays representing mountains, cascading waterfalls, and other fantastical shapes that have been perfected over centuries in Japan. The kiku tradition involves cultivating as many blooms as possible from a single plant. What look like enormous flower arrangements are in fact one continuous plant, delicately trained along a specially designed trellis for 11 months in New York Botanical Garden.
