Glen Canyon Dam's Powerplant

The Glen Canyon Dam on Lake Powell in Arizona produces 4.5 billion kilowatt-hours of hydroelectric power annually, the equivalent of burning 2.5 million tons of coal or 11 million barrels of oil. It took a decade (1956-1966) to build from a series of gigantic concrete blocks and, unfortunately, eighteen workers perished during its construction. At 710 feet tall, Glen Canyon Dam is just 16 feet shorter than the Hoover Dam, which is 370 miles downstream on Lake Mead.
