The Dodge Dart was introduced in America for the 1960 model year, debuting in 1959 as a lower-priced, full-size model based on the Plymouth platform. It was created to give Dodge dealerships a full-size, lower-priced car, available in several body styles, including sedans, hardtops, and wagons. The Dart was a continuous model line from 1960-1976, though its size and position in the market shifted over time. It started as a full-size car (1960–1961), became a mid-size car (1962), and was then established as a popular compact car from 1963 until production ended in North America in 1976.

The nameplate was resurrected for a new Fiat-derived compact sedan, which was introduced at the 2012 North American International Auto Show and went on sale in the U.S. in June 2012 as a 2013 model. While U.S. production of the Dodge-branded model ceased in September 2016, a virtually identical version was produced in China under the Fiat brand until March 2017.
