“Inherit the Wind” (United Artists, 1960). British lobby card featuring Spencer Tracy, Harry Morgan and Fredric March.

An American film directed by Stanley Kramer, “Inherit the Wind” fictionalizes the 1925 Scopes “Monkey” trial in which a school teacher in a small Southern town was brought to trial for teaching Darwinism, which was then a violation of state law. In the film, Spencer Tracy plays the teacher’s defense attorney, Henry Drummond, who is patterned after Clarence Darrow, the actual defense attorney in the Scopes trial. Fredric March plays Matthew Harrison Brady, a staunch foe of evolution and a Biblical scholar, who assists in the prosecution. The Brady character is patterned after William Jennings Bryan, a noted statesman and three-time presidential candidate who assisted the prosecution in the Scopes trial. The stage is set and the courtroom takes on a circus atmosphere with radio broadcasting, newspaper photography and spectator outbursts during the trial.
