"They swarmed upon me in ever-accumulating heaps." Art by Harry Clarke for Poe's "The Pit and the Pendulum" (1936)

From "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" by Edgar Allan Poe. NY: Tudor Publishing Co., 1936. Later Printing.

Born in Dublin, Harry Clarke (1889-1931) was one of Ireland’s greatest stained glass artists. He created over 160 stained glass windows for religious and commercial commissions and his name is synonymous with quality craftsmanship in his stained glass work. Clarke was also a renowned book illustrator for the London publisher Harrap during the first quarter of the 20th century, regarded as the golden age of gift-book illustration. His first printed work was Hans Christian Anderson’s “Fairy Tales” (1916), followed by Edgar Allan Poe’s “Tales of Mystery and Imagination” (1919), for which he created 32 full-page illustrations, 8 in full color, plus many smaller black & white drawings. Another one of Clarke's better-known works is Goethe's "Faust," published in 1925.
