Extracting object using apply image (finished product)
This works best with an object on a plain background rather than a busy background. In fact it won't work any other way. This is actually a crap example of it because I had to paint the butterfly and it looks like hell. I also included a drop shadow that wasn't originally there.
1) Go to channels palette.
2) Pick channel with most contrast (usually blue).
3) Make copy of that channel.
4) Go to Image>Apply Image. Click OK
5) With Blue Copy channel open, make it as b/w as you can. This is going to be a mask.
6) If it's black-on-white, invert so it's white-on-black. (or invert it during Load Selection)
7) Pick RGB channel, go to Layers palette.
8) Select>Load Selection
9) Object should show selection marching ants.
10) Copy it and paste it onto a new file. Set feather at 1 px.
11) Insert any background you want.
