The Loretto Chapel was completed in 1878 and patterned after King Louis IX's Sainte Chapelle in Paris - a striking contrast to the adobe churches in the area. The twenty-foot-tall, tightly wound stairs make two 360-degree turns and have no central support... to make such a staircase using only wooden dowels is indeed an astonishing work of craftsmanship.
