The Buildings of England was a major project under the editorship and authorship of Nikolaus Pevsner. BE1, the first volume, was published in July 1951 and was on Cornwall. Although about 30,000 copies of the early books were printed, sales were disappointing. However Pevsner managed to get sponsorship and the series survived until 1974 with the publication of BE46 on Staffordshire. After that, the series broadened to encompass other parts of the British Isles.
