Avon Books 272 - Robert Briffault - Europa Variant Covers

In 1950 Avon Books did something rather uncommon: they published a book with two variant covers simultaneously. The book in question is Avon 272 - Europa by Robert Briffault and the covers couldn't be more different.

The one on the left is known as the "Map Variant" and the one on the right is know as the "Bondage Variant". The "Map Variant" was reused by Avon in 1955 for "Confessions of a Princess" and the "Bondage Variant" was reused in 1957. No one is quite sure why Avon issued variant covers. Perhaps they distributed the "Map Variant" to more "sensitive" areas of the country? My "Bondage Variant" is a Canadian edition.

Cover artist for both variants is Raymond Johnson
