"What drives a married man to other women?"
Great cover, terrible review:
The dreary story of the life of Francis Slade, from birth to old age, from a lower middle-class family, with his parents one short step up the socio-economic ladder, and according to the author- from nothing to nothing, is a serious novel about an American Anyman. Actually, the author devotes most of his attention to Frank's sex life- from early experiments to middle-aged infidelities- and to longish soliloquies on Frank's ambitions (more money), his religion (vaguely convenient), his ideas on sex, and what he thinks about politics (isolationist). A pretty dull job- the writing is cliche-ridden and you never really do know why Frank wastes his life- and actually is such a jerk. (Kirkus, 1953)
