Genus Hydnum_subgenus Hydnum 5462
What has long been called Hydnum repandum in North America has turned out to be numerous species, none of which are H. repandum, which is European.
These are atypical fruitbodies with stunted caps and prolific spines covering the stipes. I'm not sure what caused this, but it had been quite cold previous to my finding them.
