in the dark

Photoshoot in a dark alleyway of Paris with beautiful Brianna Delfs. Experimenting with some posing techniques plus simple combination of hard and soft lighting.

Things I have learnt/will do differently next time:

1. Gelling rim light a warmer CTO (1/2 instead of 1/4) than the Key would have worked better, as I think the halo/highlights from the kicker should be warmer than the key.

2. Tamron 17-50 2.8 is rubbish at focusing in dark environments and nowhere near the sharpness of 70-200 2.8 OS especially wide-open.

3. Make sure to lock focus on the closest eye to me (amateur hour).

4. Get to the location earlier as the ambient started dropping quicker than I could adjust shutter speed for it.

5. Boomed and diffused lightsource slightly above the model creates very pleasing light.

6. Letting the model know when her gaze is looking a bit too far from the natural position of the eye.

Strobist:

Key: YN460 II through westcott 43', gelled CTO 1/2, @1/8

Bg: YN460 II clamped to a drainage pipe, gelled CTO 1/4, @1/16
