The steps and lamps of York Mansion House

The Mansion House was built as the official residence of the Lord Mayor in 1725-33. The iron railings were made by the smith John Beadale, who given his freedom (allowed to set us and practice his craft after serving his apprenticeship and becoming a freeman of the city) for "making the iron work at the new house at Common Hall" in 1726. Common Hall was the medieval building which once stood on the site. The lamps may be a later alteration as they retain gas burners. I noticed these as I stood with the Lord Mayor at the window in the background, having delivered the drawings I had done for him to auction at his charity ball and Christmas card. The lamps are now fitted with low energy electric bulbs, though other lamps in the adjoining St Helen's Square are still lit by gas.
