Micklegate, York

Micklegate, featuring Garforth House, York. Drawn with Pentel mechanical pencils (0.3 and 0.5mm) in an A4 cartridge paper sketchbook, my own photo references. Micklegate, or "Great Street" in old English, leads from the principal bar, or gate, to the River Ouse. As a principal thoroughfare it became a favoured street for the wealthy of the 18th century to establish their town residences. Garforth House was one of these, designed by the eminent architect John Carr and built in 1756-7. The street also retains a number of late medieval a d 17th century buildings, some of them disguised by later, more fashionable facades. One of my early adventures in architectural pencil studies, dating from 2017.
