York Minster and St.Mary's church, Castlegate, York
The view across the city from Clifford's Tower, the most prominent surviving part of the royal castle of York. On the horizon are York Minster and the tower of the Roman Catholic Church of St Wilfrid. The lantern of All Saints Church, pavement partially obscures the Minster as does the spire of St Mary's church, Castlegate. In the right foreground is Fairfax House, a town house of 1754-55 with a more modest 19th century house next to it. The late 20th century Hilton Hotel is in the foreground, with a glimpse of the roofs of Castlegate House just visible over the roof. The Copppergate Centre lies behind Fairfax house, justly famous for housing the Jorvik Viking Centre which marks the site of the heart of Viking Age York.
