Around the camp fire

The year 6 trip was to St Nicks, an environmental centre established on the site of a former landfill site to the east of York city centre. Here the children were able to participate in activities designed to make them more aware of their environment. My group began by picking up litter, having decided against planting a wild flower meadow. Then we made some Christmas tree decorations with bits oif willow and string. A third activity was a trail around the site looking for objects and information about recycling. The last activity was sitting around the fire discussing how they can improve the natural surroundings of their school. It was the first opportunity I had to safely do a sketch as all the children were gathered around the fire. Drawn on site with a Staedtler pigmentliner pen in a Moleskine sketchbook, colour added from memory.
