The view from this particular bit of the front garden includes a steel framed pre-fabricated house. There are quite a few on the Carr Estate in Acomb, including several streets near our house. They were designed and built just after the Second World War to help cope with the shortage of housing brought about by slum clearance and wartime bombing. The York examples were renovated with new external cladding and modern insulation a few years ago and, I am told, are very comfortable and energy efficient. Just in front of the house is the snicket that provides a shortcut to Tostig Avenue and hence to the school where my wife works and I volunteer in "normal" times.
